This project of mine is very personal as it displays but a small part of my great grandmother’s past. When it came to producing this artwork, I immediately settled on the cyanotype process as its one of my favourite, traditional photographic methods. Cyanotypes, for many of us, are now considered to be a thing of the past but for this project it just seemed fitting. I wanted to convey the history of this piece simply through the process in which it was produced (before you even look at the content)!

By using this process, I could easily show the correlation between the artwork and the past. The piece itself is made up of two spliced images of my great grandmother as she was growing up- that have then been accompanied by four samples of my great grandmother’s own handwriting (describing anecdotes from her life). Once combined, the piece of artwork that I have named ‘Life Before Now’ shows not only a personal past but a creative one.
