A Lot of my work focuses thematically around ideas of the past - particularly pertaining to themes of nostalgia, grief, childhood and memory. I find myself constantly drawn to exploring these themes in a broad range of mediums including; print, sculptural, projection, audio, mixed media animation and video based works. I have a love and somewhat obsession with archival but personal imagery, (peoples home movies, childhood photos, toys we might have played with as kids) and I find this often creeps its way into both the work I make and the work I enjoy consuming. Nostalgia is an idea I am fascinated by and have at times felt consumed by, so I feel drawn to researching, writing and creating works surrounding these ideas.

‘Absence’ is a video piece weaving together archive footage from my childhood home movies with a poem I wrote on grief. It focuses on grief I experienced as a child and how distorted and deteriorated our memories become surrounding the people we’ve lost. One of the videos used was filmed the night before my grandfather passed away, and another on the last family holiday we took before my dad passed. The use of these clips with others I filmed as a child makes this piece incredibly personal and at times raw for me. Throughout this project I explored the distortion and entropy of our memories by focusing on experimenting with degrading images both physically and digitally, ultimately leading to my final video based outcomes ‘Absence’ and ‘Easy’. The effects on this piece came from play and experimentation - channelling my inner child to bring this work together.
